A few years ago, I pondered the following statements written by the wise King Solomon:

If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, do not be amazed at the matter. . . . Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He (the Lord) will repay him (the lender) again! Ecclesiastes 5:8  Proverbs 19:17

After reading these words I penned my thoughts, which have became one of the guiding, growing themes of my life.

AND WHAT SHOULD I DO?

And what should I do?
When all around 
Are hungry mouths to feed?

And what should I do
When criminals 
Suppress and bind
The weak to 
Bonds that never
Break?

What should I do
When I know of 
A man that beat his
Family down?

And what should I do?
When there are 
Those who live
Inciting riot
In the street?

And what should I do
When just a taste
Leads throngs
To lifelong cravings
Never satisfied?
I see it all 
And when I do
There is a part 
Down deep inside
That shrinks so small
And insignificant 
I say, “I think, 
I know 
I cannot do.”

But then I look 
Before me and 
As far as ocean 
Wide I see a 
Thousand billion
Opportunities to 
Help one here 
And there and everywhere
Before me 
Like a million 
Thousand billion
Pebbles on a beach
Now I know
What I should do!

And so, I do!
Yes, now I know
There is one
Step that I can take,

To make one small
And seeming 
Insignificant soul
A better state.  

Yes, now I know 
What I should do
And so, I do!

I go and do
One little 
Thing so 
Small that 
Only the most 
Hopeful ever 
Think it might 
Yet make a 
Difference in the dark!

Yes, I do know
What I should do!
So, I do 
What I 
Should do!

I see a thousand billion
Acts of kindness 
Not yet done,
And what I do 
Is to do,
But one!

And that one 
Act that I can do,
In the space
Before me 
On my way:
I do! 

I do because 
I can,

I do 
Because the one
Small act of kindness
Will be one that 
Makes a difference 
To the one
To whom it’s 
Done!

Yes, one received it 
On that day,

They received 
It and it meant
Relief!

Yes I do know
Now what to do
and so, I do!

And so, I do!
